Speaking Up - is it too risky when you are having difficulty coping
Every now and again the pressure is on! During a renewal season, at year end or when you are handling a large portfolio of high value claims for example. Or as some of you are seeing today, a high volume of work generally, perhaps due to staff cut backs, which can result in the pressure being more sustained.
So what happens when it begins to get too much and you find yourself in that high pressure mode for prolonged periods?
Should you speak up?
My interview with Jane Thomas
The deeper you are into the stress of it all, the harder it becomes to make any clear decisions and choices – you may reach a point where it just becomes too much and you go absent or even breakdown in some way and become ill. So with that, to some extent it's a no brainer, because the last thing you want to do is to compromise your health.

EMPOWERING INFORMATION FOR REINSURANCE & INSURANCE PROFESSIONALS
I know from experience of working with some professionals that they feel it could make things worse if they go to their boss. They begin telling themselves they will be spun out of the organization, the perception being they are not able to handle the pressure.

The key is to catch it early from a place where you can make coherent choice and can work with the situation from a place of alert clarity. This is before the mind jumps in and starts telling stories about what a dreadful situation you are in and what awful things are going to happen to you in the short or long term future.
So, how do you catch it? There may be physical changes such as stomach cramps, tightness in the chest, headaches, a dry mouth – it could be you begin sweating. In fact you may find yourself losing sleep, becoming forgetful, irritable, not eating or perhaps over eating. The most important thing is to take notice of these things and recognize they are there. Some people don’t even acknowledge them or turn a blind eye, this is a mistake. You may also observe some of these changes in a colleague or one of your team
